John Paul II: Great Communicator, great human being
Today, April 2, 2005 is indeed a sad day for Catholics, Christians, and all other religions who recognize the Vatican.
Pope John Paul II, who served for more than 26 years as leader of the Roman Catholic church, entered eternal life to be with God and with Jesus; ending a long and prosperous life of almost 85 years -- a life indeed full of joy, happiness, and wonderful moments he shared with those around him, before and after being elected Pope in 1978.
John Paul II, whose real name was Karol Wojtyla, has traveled more than any pontiff in history; served longer than any pontiff in recent history (third longest-serving pope overall), and communicated with all walks of life more than any one who has led the Catholic Church in recorded history. He was in many ways like the late Ronald Reagan: he was the great communicator.
For those of you who live in Los Angeles, John Paul made a historic visit to the City of Angels back in 1987; celebrating mass both at the Coliseum and Dodger Stadium.
And in honor of the Pope's memory, the Olympic torch at the Grand Old Lady, which was lit for over a week to honor the memory of Ronald Reagan last year, is lit once again.
I don't believe John Paul visited Las Vegas during his 1987 visit, but I can tell you this: he was a wonderful human being, who touched the lives of everyone. He spoke many languages (hence the "great communicator" term), including English and Spanish, and aside from the duties he had, John Paul was a recreationist, who swimmed regularly to stay in shape until 2002.
Go rest high on the tall mountain, Karol. Your spirit will indeed last forever in eternal life.
