RD THOUGHTS - NOVEMBER 2, 2006

First off, God Bless Bob Barker. The longtime television host and entertainer is going to call it a career after 50 consecutive years on television. It started on December 30, 1956; when he took over as host of "Truth or Consequences" (hosted previously by creator/host Ralph Edwards), and it all comes to an end sometime in July 2007. If all goes well, Bob, at the age of 83, will walk away from an institution which has graced the televisions for more than 35 years -- The Price Is Right.

It will indeed be the end of an era, and whomever the next host of The Price Is Right will be (should CBS keep the series going once Barker departs), it will be a very difficult pair of shoes to fill. I've heard reports that an unknown weatherman is a prime candidate to take over; however I feel that Todd Newton is the top candidate to take over the series in September, should it continue. Bob Goen is another prime candidate, as is Mark L Walberg. Chuck Woolery is another name in the hat, but he is close to 65 now.

Perhaps CBS and Barker should do on-air auditions to select the new host, like they did when a new permanent announcer was needed in 1985 and again in 2003 following the deaths of Johnny Olson and Rod Roddy respectively.

Bob Barker ranks up there with Johnny Carson, Bob Hope, Milton Berle, Vin Scully, Lucille Ball and many other legends in the entertainment world. And from what I hear from Television City, CBS is planning a huge retirement sendoff for Bob with a prime-time special.

Janice Pennington, Holly Hallstrom, and Dian Parkinson: if you three can set aside your personal issues and get together one last time with Bob; then that will be a shining moment on television. Janice of couse MUST be there, since she served the longest of the models.

Rod and Johnny O can't make it of course; but I'm sure those two will look down and say to Bob in the end: thank you, Bob, and thank you CBS.

So who's still around in the game show world? Favorites like Gene Rayburn, Jack Barry, Bill Cullen, Art Fleming, Peter Tomarken, Bert Convy, Allen Ludden and Ray Combs are no longer around. Barry, Ludden, Convy and Combs sadly did not have the chance to enjoy retirement (Barry suffered a fatal cardiac arrest, Ludden and Convy both died of cancer, and Combs commited suicide).

Others like Jack Narz, Tom Kennedy, Jim Lange, Monty Hall, Jim Perry, Geoff Edwards, Bob Eubanks and Peter Marshall have graciously stepped aside and allow the younger group like Pat Finn, Mark Walberg, Todd Newton, Roger Lodge and Howie Mandell to keep the tradition alive. Perry is probably the youngest of this group to retire (age 57), although he did make a few appearances afterwards in the 1990s before leaving the biz for good. Eubanks is still on TV now and then, and Wink Martindale is coming out of retirement (at age 72) to host a game show again.

I feel for Anna Nicole. Can you imagine the pain she's going through? I have watched her interview on "The Insider" and "Entertainment Tonight", and is probably the most heart-wrenching interview I've ever seen. To be a prisoner in her own home (avoiding the press and media) is just as bad. And you know, you people, especially those in the tabloids and paparazzi should back off and leave her alone. Everyone should be blessed to hear her own words on the tragic death of her son Daniel, and not rely on rumors and other stories which are far from the truth.

Anyway, watching what Anna Nicole had to say and the pain she's endured since Sept. 10 is very real and heartwrenching. No mother should ever go through this. How Anna Nicole finds the strength to keep it going is remarkable. Eventually, Anna will overcome this horrible tragedy. Doris Adkisson is a prime example of what I'm talking about, and she had to endure the tragic deaths of FIVE of her six sons: Jack B. Adkisson Jr (1959), David Adkisson (1984), Michael Adkisson (1987), Chris Adkisson (1991) and Kerry Gene Adkisson (1993). The only son still alive and Doris' lone saving grace is Kevin Ross Adkisson. And at the end of the year, Kevin, Doris and the rest of his family will be moving to Hawaii to happily enjoy retirement. Look up Don Muraco when you get there, folks.

Of course the Adkissons are better known to you and me as the Von Erichs.

Hats off to Eldorado for reclaiming the Merlin Olsen cleat, in overtime on Oct. 20. Eldorado can go to post season play Friday with a win over Valley. If they lose, they're done for the year. A correction to what I said in the past, and I blame this on the writers who can't get things straight: Eldorado has indeed won five out of the last seven meetings against Chaparral; they lost in 2001 and again in 2005, so in all the Sundevils had a 3-game winning streak against the Cowboys (2002, 2003 and 2004), still their longest streak against them. One of the writers still got it wrong in the RJ, claiming that Eldorado beat Chap for the first time in five years. Either get it right or don't write it at all! By the way, the "Bone" game between Las Vegas and Rancho High Schools went to LVHS. It was their 41st consecutive meeting between these two schools; two of the oldest in the Las Vegas Valley.

Also congrats to John Marshall High School in L.A., retaining the Victory Bell over their rival Belmont. Way to go, Barristers.

Congratulations to the St. Louis Cardinals for winning the World Series. Go crazy folks, go crazy! A World Series winner! I'm sure Jack Buck had a smile on his face watching from above. Joe Buck, excellent job; and you have to believe that he is still a Cardinals honk through and through.

Good show with the Latin Grammys last night in New York. J Lo's backyard too. Adamari Lopez, hats off to you for your gracious appearance to begin the program, and of course Shakira stole the show. She looks great too, much better with the hair color she has now, and her English has indeed gotten much better; and very clear too! Her performance was quite steamy, if you know what I mean. Thalia's performance of Seduccion was ahem interesting. RBD is still a strong group of young singers, just like Timbiriche, Menudo and Flans before them. Well, this year was Shakira's and next year I think will belong to Paulina Rubio. The Latin scene was well represented in MSG, and as many of you people know, New York has a strong Latin presence, just like there is here in L.A. (but stronger, of course).

Just for the record, I still take Barbara Mori anyday. :)

Enjoy the weekend, folks.
